Information about Calais
Calais is a city in the north of France, in the Upper France region.
The population of the metropolitan area, according to the 2010 census, is 126,395. Calais faces the Strait of Dover, at the narrowest point in the English Channel and is the closest French city to England. Calais is an important port for ferries between France and England, and since 1994, the Channel Tunnel has linked neighboring Coquelles to Folkestone by rail.
The old part of the city, Calais-Nord, is located on an artificial island surrounded by canals and harbors. The modern part of the city, St-Pierre, is located southeast. In the center of the old city is the Tour du Guet, or watchtower, a structure built in the thirteenth century, which was used as a lighthouse until 1848, when it was replaced by a more modern lighthouse. To the south-east of the old city, there is the church of Notre-Dame, built during the English occupation of Calais: the only English-style Tudor church in all of France. [2] In this church the future French president Charles de Gaulle married his wife Yvonne Vendroux originally from the city in 1921. [2]
Today, visited by more than 10 million tourists a year, Calais is known primarily for being a fishing port and a center for marketing fish.
