Why visit the Tremiti?

The Tremiti Islands are the only archipelago in the Adriatic Sea. They belong to the Gargano National Park and have been a Nature Reserve since 1989. During the summer season they can be reached by ferry and hydrofoil from the ports of Termoli, in Molise, or from the ports of Vieste, Peschici and Rodi Garganico. Only 22 km from the north coast of the Gargano promontory, they represent one of the most important tourist centers in Puglia. Several times awarded the Blue Flag, the Tremiti are known for the quality of the bathing waters, for the extraordinary seabed and for the surprising colors of the sea. Diving into those crystal clear waters is incredible: green, turquoise and blue alternate in an almost surreal spectacle. The archipelago consists of five islands. San Nicola is the capital as well as the historic island: fortifications, towers, churches and the abbey of San Nicola make it an open-air museum. San Domino, on the other hand, is the largest and most inhabited island. Covered by a pine forest, it is the favorite of many tourists as it is accompanied by the only sandy beach in the archipelago, Cala delle Arene, but also full of caves to visit. Capraia and Pianosa, much smaller, are part of the Integral Marine Reserve, for which there is a ban on landing and, for Pianosa, fishing, diving and navigation below 500 meters from the island are prohibited. The rock of Cretaccio, so called because it is made of yellowish clay, rises between San Domino and San Nicola. According to legend, during stormy nights, it is inhabited by the ghost of a prisoner who escaped from the island's prisons. These islands, full of ancient legends, represent one of the richest natural habitats in the Mediterranean. A small paradise that is worth visiting.
