Dún Laoghaire formerly Kingstown, is an Irish seaside town and a ferry port located about 12 km south of Dublin, and is the administrative center of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County.
Dún Laoghaire remains the only town in Ireland with town status to have its own Vocational Education Committee. It is inserted in the area called the Greater Dublin Area.
The name derives from the founder, Laoghaire, Supreme Sovereign of Ireland of the 5th century, who chose the site of the current village as a site for a naval base from which to set sail for the invasions of Britain and France. 'Dún' is a Gaelic word meaning 'strong'. King Laoghaire is famous, among other things, for allowing St. Patrick to wander the island of Ireland and spread Christianity.
