Pescara, (Pescàrë in the Abruzzese dialect, Piscàrë in pescarese) is an Italian city of 120,286 inhabitants, the capital of the homonymous province in Abruzzo. It is the most populous municipality in the region and is the heart of a metropolitan area of over 250,000 inhabitants for the six nearest municipalities, and up to 420,000 including the entire area of influence. The city is, together with L'Aquila, home to the offices of the council, the junta and the regional departments.
It is a lively cultural hub, having given birth to personalities such as Gabriele d'Annunzio and Ennio Flaiano, and being home to universities and influential events, including the Pescara Jazz (the first Italian summer festival dedicated to the music genre), the Ennio Flaiano Award and the Fuori Uso contemporary art festival. The city also has a remarkable sporting tradition, having hosted the Acerbo Cup from 1929 to 1961, the Matteotti Trophy from 1945 and the XVI edition of the Mediterranean Games in 2009.
