Stranraer in is a city in southern Scotland, in the western part of the Dumfries and Galloway region and in the county of Wigtownshire. Stranraer is the second largest city (or toon as its inhabitants call it) of the Dumfries and Galloway region with a population of about 13,000 including the neighboring areas compared to nearly 8,000 of Annan, the nearest town. Stranraer is an administrative center of the western part (Wigtownshire county) of the Dumfries and Galloway region and is best known as the ferry port connecting Scotland with Belfast in Northern Ireland.
The inhabitants of Stranraer are called Clayeholer.
An urban renewal of the central-southern area is currently underway (including the Dick's Hill, Ochtrelure and the southern Liddesdale Road areas in Gallo
